Behaviour management

Last night on Twitter I discussed behaviour management, there are times when I feel like I am pulling out my hair with my class so when the Performance Management observation was due it was decided that perhaps behaviour management would be a good thing to look at.  I went into my lesson as normal, I do not believe in pulling out all the stops for observations as I like a true reflection on my teaching.  The outcome is this nothing is wrong with my behaviour management, nothing can be given for suggestions I have excellent behaviour management (currently). I think…More

Working in a team

I have thought long and hard about this post mainly because I do not want to seem to be moaning but I think I should reflect and see what others think. I really am finding working as part of a team as the hardest bit of my job, that is not to say I am not a team player, I just find working as part of a team to give children in the year group the same experiences hard.  The head of my school is really into every child having the same experience throughout a team and has been having…More

Reflections

So my blog has been neglected for almost a month now this is for two reasons:- I have been too to catch breath My hubs laptop broke so trying to get time with mine is like trying to breathe at work I think a little update is needed while I have breath and the hub is out for a bit so time with my laptop can be reclaimed.  I can only begin to tell you how busy I have been and therefore how tired I am.  I feel like I am an NQT all over again trying to learn what…More

My favourite ways to group children

All these ways that I group children have been taken from a fab course that I was on.  Now I know when I say what course there will be rolling of eyes by some that may stumble across the blog but I loved it.  The course was on co-operative learning and is what some may know as Kagan techniques.  If I took anything out of this course it was how to group children and how to get them working together properly.  Chris Ward who took the course also made the statement that in the classroom: Children should be talking 70%…More

Less lost

So another week done and dusted at my new school and only one till the holidays (so happy) and I can report I do feel less lost.  Things are not that different I suppose – teaching is teaching no matter where you are (well as long as you are in a place to teach).  There are some things that are still different but I suppose that I will get there. I do have to say that I am looking forward to a break – me time, time to reflect and adapt more.  I want to thank everyone for their support…More

Lost sheep

That is what I should change my name too!  Everything and I mean everything is so different – not in a bad way just in an everything is so different way.  It is hard to pin point what is so different without using the word ‘everything’ but these appear to me the main things. Phonics programme used No bells to mark lunch etc. Have to do playground duty – in Scotland we don’t do this Testing – optional sats Maths – ways in which things are taught (now this could simply be a KS1 vs KS2 thing) More staff than…More

Last day of term take one

Yesterday was the last day of term in Renfrewshire in Scotland – yup up there they are now on our Summer holidays for six whole weeks.  I however am not – I am probably identifying myself far too much by stating these details but as there is nothing of a negative in my blog I shall forgo the worry of it all.  Tomorrow (1st July) I will start my new job in a junior school in Peterborough – hense not being on my holidays and also the title take one as I will have another end of term to go! I…More

Smashing window

Today was a normal day until after lunch when all I heard was a ‘doink’ thinking it was my children being silly I asked what it was. Cue to children going to the window when I heard shouts of “the window is smashed”. Yup someone had thrown a stone (?) and the window had totally shattered on the outside pane of the double glazed window. Luckily we have safety glass so although shattered, it did not fall to bits but stayed together. It was the children from the local high school who are on different lunches to ours. What a…More

Rose review

So it appears for now that on one hand the Rose Review has been cancelled but then on the other schools are continue doing what they do.  So once again schools are left in this land of limbo – we can’t not teach the little ones but if we do the ‘wrong’ thing and the big O comes in then we could be in trouble. So what are schools to do?  Well in my opinion we should continue what we do – at the end of the day as long as we are achieving the objectives then it should not…More
